Question

So bros, I was wondering...

When we are reading about all the sacrifices & preparation details, etc from our readings, what should I be taking away from them since we are no longer under the old covenant??

Take away that Jesus dying on the cross is the purist, most righteous, most sacrificial, most pleasing aroma, and most costly sacrifice that will ever be made in the history of mankind and that we should literally have eternal gratitude for Jesus sacrificing himself

God sacrificed his Son for us so we no longer have to make animal sacrifices like in the OT.

We do need to be living sacrifices:

Romans 12:1

In view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.

Something has to be done because we have sinned. Atonement has to be made in some way. Jesus was the ultimate. I've thought it would be a good bible field trip to find some jews that still do this stuff (there's got to be somebody somewhere doing it), and witness a sacrifice of a lamb. I think it'd be kind of intense. We'd experience the consequences of our sin more.

Thanks for trying to get the bros involved Lisa. It seems like we've got a few regulars, but I love hearing from different perspectives. I really hope some new people will share. I'd love to hear what they have to say. I'm sure its interesting.

Good point Craig! I love connecting references from the NT to the OT, ... and when the message is the same, it helps me to appreciate even more the omniscient and omnipotent God :)

Justin, you must have a strong stomach for blood and gor! Just the idea that they took the blood and wiped it on the ears and toes doesn't sound very fun. ewww!

I had a question regarding a response that Aaron replied to Moses. Can you explain what was going on here? Why did Aaron choose to not eat the offering and what was wrong with it? Did it have to do something w/ the death of his 2 sons?

"Today they sacrificed their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord, but such things as this have happened to me. Would the Lord have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today?" When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.

Good question. I'm not exactly sure what was going on there. I think what was happening before that moment was that Aaron and his sons were being consecrated and ordained as priests. They were being set apart from the people and would have very special duties to atone for the people's sin. Aaron's first 2 sons sinned and died. God then reminds them that he is holy. Lev 10:3 says, "Aaron remained silent." I think he realized they had made a mistake. There was nothing to say. Any apology or praise just wouldn't be reverend enough.
So then we get to the part you were asking about. Aaron doesn't eat the sin offering, which was against what Moses said. I think Aaron realized how important his role was, but also how unworthy he was to do it. He was going to be like Jesus, but he was not perfect. That's a humbling place to be. I think Aaron understood the significance and Moses was okay with him not eating it this time because of that. Aaron had the right heart, but not the correct action. Which is more important? "I desire mercy not sacrifice." "The Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath." Hope that helps.

Thx Justin. That was helpful yet convicting. We need to revere God and be humble when challenged by God.
