Why was Solomon king?

Why was Solomon chosen to be king?  That's something I scratch my head over.  It just says, after he was born, that the Lord loved him.  Later it says the Lord chose him.  Was it just a royal birth, and even God blessed him from the beginning?  David had many children and Solomon was one of the youngest, so why him?  We don't hear about the other sons, except for the ones that mess up, Absalom, Amnon and Adonijah.  Maybe the others weren't spiritual either.  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Hey Justin, believe it or not, this is my 3rd attempt to answer your question...1st one got erased, 2nd one got posted instead as a comment on Wisdom below and now hopefully, you'll get an answer...haha..talk about being the newbee on the blog...

anyhow, Nehemiah 13:26 said that "...He was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel." So in essence, because of God's sovereignty is why/how he was made king. Here are some more scriptures on Solomon in case you or anybody else wants to research this too: 2Samuel 12:24-1Kings 11:43, 1 Chronicles 28 & 29, 1 Chroincles 1-10, Psalm 72 and Matthew 6:29 and 12:42....maybe we can find out if my other guess besides "because God said so", could be true that "if indeed he was David's youngest son (as you said), maybe because he was the last good one who actually listened to his father??? Hence, God saw a potential in him? Or maybe, it really was simply that God predestined him. I really don't know....

(haha Jax u r HILARIOUS!)

Justin, I wondered why Solomon was chosen as well? Furthermore, why did God bless Solomon? Right before God blessed Solomon with wisdom and everything else, we are told in 1 Kings 3:2-3 that Solomon "offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places", i.e. he was worshiping other gods. Isn't that one of the sins that God abhors and in fact, He later rejects many kings after Solomon for doing that? Doesn't fully makes sense to me? But maybe Jax is right, maybe God saw goodness in Solomon that was not present or as present in his brothers?

now this is totally just a guess of mine, but i was thinking that another possible reason for solomon's selection was perhaps god's desire to show his mercy. to show how he can make something good out of evil. solomon was a child of david and bathsheba, the latter became his wife as a result of adultery and murder. as you know they lost their first child (and other consequences would come later 2 sam 12:7-12) and yet solomon would live to become one of the greatest kings in the history of israel. if god wanted to, he could have decided to bring forth another noble like solomon from another marriage david had with another wife. yet god chose to bring forth such a king from the union of david and bathsheba. perhaps david himself was surprised at god's decision. its kind of like how paul did such horrible things against christians before his conversion, yet god would still used him to save many. peter was untrue to god and a coward at a different points in his life, yet god would still use him in a very important way in the church. abraham was a liar at points in his life, yet god would still use him to make a holy nation. i am not excusing sin, but i think it is important and cool to see how god can make something new and good out something bad.

1. Genetics: It has to be conceded that no matter what action parents, society, or the children themselves take, the genetic hand that the child was dealt will have a great impact on the outcome of any choices whether good or bad. However, the good news is that many negative genetic factors can be overcome to at least some extent by wise choices, which we will discuss in a few minutes.
